Oh, the excitement of cervix checks. I had been having contractions all week long. I was so excited for my 37 week OBGYN appointment, because I was finally going to be getting my first cervix check! I thought for sure that with all the contractions I had been having, I was dilated to at least a one. For those of you who don’t know, the cervix goes from 0cm dilation all the way up to 10cm at the end of labor. When the doctor performs a cervix check, they check to see how thin (effaced) the cervix is, how dilated, and how high or low it is. The thinner, the more dilated, the lower, the better! At least when you are already full term.
When I got to my doctor’s office, I was beyond excited. That quickly changed. Things started to go downhill almost the moment I walked in. They had me pee in a cup, as usual. My bladder was so full that I couldn’t stop peeing, and the cup overflowed all over my hands. To make matters worse, I ended up spilling my own urine all over my pants. Luckily, I drink so much water that it probably didn’t matter too much anyways. But still, yuck! I then sat down and waited to be called from the waiting room, still covered in pee. Finally, they called me. They weighed me and took my blood pressure, and everything was fine and dandy.
Then the nurse took me into my room. I didn’t see the paper sheet that meant I was getting the cervix check that I was so looking forward to. I asked her why, and she told me that this APN doesn’t do cervix checks until 38 weeks. I was crushed. I told her that I had been having some contractions, and that I would really like to have a cervix check. She said no problem, but I had to move to a different room for some reason. It took half an hour for me to finally get into that room, as it had been occupied by someone else. When the room was finally mine, I got undressed, hopped up onto the table, and pulled that sexy paper sheet over me. I waited. And waited. And waited. I must have been sitting there for over 30 minutes, shivering under that awful paper sheet.
Finally, my APN came in. She had a student in tow, which was all fine and dandy. The student was super nice. I think she was from England or Australia – I have a hard time telling the difference between those two accents. Anyways, she was awesome. She asked me what I was going to name the baby, and she told me how much she loved the name Daphne! She then proceeded to do my cervix check. She pretty much had to shove her entire fist inside of me to get to it. Remember, the lower the better. That was the first disappointing (and painful!) moment. Then, she said, “Oh wow!” I was sure that she was about to tell me that she was surprised that I was already dilated so much! But no. She was surprised at how thick and closed my cervix was. That was disappointing moment number two. I was absolutely crushed. All that pain, for nothing at all!
All I could do was hope that I would be dilated by the time my 38 week appointment rolled around. I couldn’t wait to pop that baby out! I also couldn’t wait to get home to change my pants.
What was your first cervix check like: were you disappointed or pleasantly surprised?
